Varenna is an attractive village on the eastern shore of Lake Como, looking over the central part of the lake towards Bellagio. Varenna is a popular tourist destination with its pretty waterfront and tiny stone beach. Tremezzo is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Lake Como, situated just in front of Bellagio. It has a stunning view of the central basin and the Grigne. Since 1947, the village, along with Lenno and Mezzegra, has become part of a unique commune, known as Tremezzina. Bellano stands on a cape, where the vast panorama embraces the lake’s western shores, from the town of Menaggio up to the town of Dongo. It is famous for l’Orrido (Ravine), a gorge formed by the waters of the Pioverna torrent. Bellano strikes a chord with those who enjoy the picturesque charm of lake side villages. As soon as you step foot on land, you’ll feel as if time has stopped and you’ll be drawn by the timeless elegance of Piazza Grossi.
Menaggio makes a fine base from which to explore the northern and southern sections of the lake. It is popular with British visitors and home to some residents who commute 8 miles to Lugano, Switzerland. This aesthetically pleasing, extremely laid-back town is similar to Bellagio, though it is somewhat less popular. Menaggio is a bustling place with hotels, restaurants, live entertainment, arcades, shops, and even a mini-golf course. It’s quite possible to spend an entire day lazing about the lovely lakefront promenade, with its flower beds and palm trees. It’s worth climbing the steep stairs to explore the older part of town where you can see remnants of the former wall.
Argegno is not glamorous, and that is one of its charm. It has retained its individual character, and remained a simple, unspoilt village where locals far outnumber visitors. Unlike its neighbours, it offers travellers a glimpse of authentic village life. Stroll along a lakeside promenade of lime trees to the small triangular piazza which is the heart of Argegno. Furthermore, Argengo is situated on one of the narrowest parts of Lake Como. The view and the food is so good that you will spend most of your evenings eating risotto with wine.
